One of the largest eruptions in Punjab occurred in March of 1947 in Rawalpindi. The sheer scale of violence and brutality set the tone for what was going to follow in Punjab later in that year. Author Neeti Nair in her book "Changing Homelands" constructs a timeline of events that led to the eruption of violence in Punjab. Starting from the political chaos in 1946 that put the secular Unionists against the Muslim League, the failure of the Cabinet Mission Plan and the organization of militant groups that were being formed by the Mulsim League to push undivided Punjab into Pakistan.
